Dark or black mold looks alarming, and it should be taken seriously. But the color alone does not tell you what kind of mold it is or how bad it is. What matters is how far it has spread, what it is growing on, and what moisture is feeding it. We contain the area, remove affected material and fix the cause.
People use "black mold" for any dark mold, and often mean Stachybotrys, a species that likes very wet cellulose materials such as paper-faced drywall. But mold color varies with species, food source and age, and many molds look black or dark green. You cannot identify the species by eye, and the cleanup approach is the same for nearly all indoor mold: fix the moisture, contain, remove and clean.
The CDC notes that mold can cause symptoms such as stuffy nose, sore throat, cough, wheezing and eye or skin irritation, especially in people with allergies, asthma or weakened immune systems. If anyone in the household is having health problems, talk to a doctor, and do not try to disturb or scrub large mold growth yourself.

Bleach is not a fix. It does not penetrate porous materials, and painting over mold hides it without removing it.
Black-looking mold turns up most often after water events that were not dried in time: a past pipe or roof leak, a flooded basement, or a sewer backup. In older Harrisburg homes we also see it on the back of walls against damp stone foundations and on ceilings under leaking roofs or bathrooms.

Small contained areas fall at the low end. Larger areas and extensive removal cost more.
What moves the price:Not necessarily, and you cannot tell the species by color. Any significant mold growth deserves proper removal, and people with asthma or allergies should be careful around it.
Bleach does not soak into porous materials and is not a solution for mold in drywall or wood. Removing the material and fixing the moisture is what works.
