Air conditioning removes moisture from the air, and that condensation collects on the evaporator coil and drains away through a pan and line. When the drain clogs, the pan overflows, or ducts are uninsulated in a hot attic, moisture lingers and mold can grow on coils, in drain pans and inside ductwork. Central Pennsylvania has hot, humid summers, which gives systems a lot of condensation to handle.

Cold weather adds another cause. Warm, humid indoor air escaping into a cold attic condenses or freezes on the underside of the roof, and when it warms the moisture soaks into the wood. Over one or two winters this can start mold on the roof deck with no leak in sight. Bathroom fans venting into the attic are a frequent culprit, and the fix is often simple, but the growth still needs to be cleaned up first.
